BERKELEY, Calif. — October 27, 2026. Berkeley Police say more than 300 catalytic converter thefts have been recorded in 2026, already exceeding the 248 incidents reported during all of 2025, reversing a three-year decline.
Background and local implications
The police safety notice published October 22 advises vehicle owners to use a well-lit location or secure garage when possible, consider catalytic converter shields installed by a mechanic, and report suspicious attempts to tamper with cars without confronting the person. The department also accepts voluntary registration of private security camera systems that may provide useful evidence.
What residents should know
The count reflects police reports available when the warning was published and should not be interpreted as a conviction total or proof that a particular neighborhood is more dangerous. Never confront a suspected thief. Call the appropriate emergency line for an active threat and use ordinary police reporting for incidents that are no longer in progress.
